Smell of Rain 雨の味
Synopsis of Film
Out of all our senses, smells have the best ability to transport us back into the memories which weaved the intricate webs of our lives. The sense of smell is not something we can consciously tune out, cap down. It grips you and brings you back to particular moments in time; moments that could be joyous, beautiful, tender, bittersweet, raw, heartbreaking etc, essentially poignant memories that endure by way of their association with smells.
The smell of rain opens up raw wounds for Xiao Qi, the protagonist of the story. It hurls him back and locks him to when he was 7 years old, having just been abandoned by his mother; Swathe by the smell of impending rain, the 7 year old Xiao Qi is alone and lost, forever trapped in time.
In that moment, a kindred spirit, Kong Long, appeared, precociously plugging the gaping hole in Xiao Qi’s heart. A collaborator of sorts, Kong Long, in shielding Xiao Qi from the harshness of reality in the years that followed, became a steady and calming presence in Xiao Qi’s subdued life. Together they created a safe world where the rest of the world is kept at arm’s length.
The arrival of Li-Er puts in peril the bond between the two young men. Her flighty nature belies the turmoil beneath as Xiao Qi is drawn slowly into her world. Struggling to keep her, and love, at arm’s length, he finds himself ultimately being threatened off his own precarious course.
At times stirring and tender, funny and irreverent, the Smell of Rain is a volatile journey into the inner worlds of a young man on the cusp of his own awakening.
